About Bharathidasan University

The Bharathidasan University or the BDU is a prestigious institution which was founded in the year 1982. It is one of those institutions which have been developed with a novel mission at its core. This university propounds the concept of imparting education which is representative of some sort of academic innovation and one which would be successful in bringing about some sort of social change in today’s world. The main campus is built over a sprawling terrain of about 1000 acres in Trichy. There is another city based campus which houses the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development, the Bharathidasan University Technology Park and the Centre for Distance Learning, along with several other prominent departments. The Bharathidasan Institute of Management or the BIM is situated within the BHEL campus and has developed in collaboration with it. Today, it is one of the topmost management institutes in India.

The Bharathidasan University is a composite centre of learning with numerous options under its umbrella. Apart from the very basic streams of arts and sciences which are a part of the standard offerings, there are other more innovative options available which include the School of Bio Medical Sciences, The School of Management, The Department of Educational Technology and the School of Pharmacy to name a few. In total, the Bharathidasan University is made up of 14 schools, 27 departments and 8 different centres under its name. The resources provided here are truly institutional and you can come across some of the most innovative courses here, with structured guidelines and processes in place. Most of these courses are renowned nationally and some have even earned international repute. Apart from the various departments and schools, there are a sizeable number of colleges which are affiliated to the Bharathidasan University. There are about 138 colleges and as many as 18 approved institutions. The streams included for these 138 colleges are Arts, Science, Fine Arts and Education. There are over 1.4 lakh students who study in all these affiliated colleges put together. The total number of programmes offered here would be almost 250 and most of them are quite popular and find plenty of takers. Almost 15 of these affiliated colleges are autonomous. 50% of these institutions offer PG courses and 25% offer PHD and M PHIL programmes for post graduates. Most of these colleges are nationally recognized and acclaimed for their academic excellence and brilliant records.

The Bharathidasan University is also especially renowned for its Centre for Distance Learning which was started in the year 1992. Originally, the aim of this programme was to serve students who resided in the university area and were unable to attend regular classes at the various colleges. Today, the program has spread across the country and there are Personal Contact Programme Centres across 41 cities spread across the length and breadth of the country. There are 16,000 students who are already a part of this distance learning programme and there have been fresh enrolments to the tune of 7000 to 8000 per year. There is no dearth of options even for the distance learning programme. There are as many as 66 programmes to choose from.
